What We Do

Jewish Federation

was established as the Jewish Community Council in March 1924 to serve the Jews of Bridgeton, Millville and Vineland by providing coordinated cultural, educational, philanthropic, religious, social and welfare services to the local Jewish community through fundraising and programming. Its chief goal was the administration of annual giving campaigns through the local Allied Jewish Appeal, on behalf of the national United Jewish Appeal.

Incorporated in March 1981 as Jewish Federation of Cumberland County to address the diverse needs of the local, national and international Jewish communities, and promote Jewish culture and heritage, it is the representative umbrella organization for Jews living in Cumberland and Salem counties.

Jewish Federation of Cumberland County assumes an active leadership role in the cultural, educational, religious, social and social welfare needs of the Jewish community. It is active in the advancement of local, national and global Jewish interests, particularly with respect to Israel and vulnerable Jewish populations around the world. Jewish Federation develops and sponsors programs for individuals and the community to realize and fulfill the mitzvot of Chesed, Tzedakah and Tikun Olam.

In cooperation with member organizations and community groups, Jewish Federation’s dedicated leadership, volunteers and professional staff work to disseminate information and develop programs and services that create awareness and understanding of issues important to all Americans, of all ethnicities, including anti-Semitism, Holocaust education, discrimination and racism, the fight against international terrorism, human rights and poverty.

Our long history in this community is the gift of support, physical and philanthropic, extended to us so generously over the years by members of the Jewish communities of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties. We hope this gift, and the strength of the Jewish community we serve, endures for many years to come.

Our Mission

Jewish Federation’s purpose is to service the Jewish community by addressing the needs of its diverse population. This includes promotion of the Jewish culture and heritage of the region; participating in the cultural, educational, philanthropic, religious and social advancement of the local, national and international Jewish communities; developing and sponsoring programs to this end; and fostering cooperation among member Jewish organizations.

How Do We Do This?

Through Campaign

A strong campaign allows us to keep our Jewish community viable, vibrant and vital.

Through Leadership

A professional staff and committed leadership ensure the strength of our community, but also ensure a significant place at the national and global levels.

Through Response

Disaster response is a communal effort, and whenever and wherever disaster occurs, Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester & Salem Counties and the national system of 155 federations swing into action.

Through Engagement

By bringing the Jewish world to our community, engaging our traditions and beliefs, and celebrating our rich culture.

Our Story

Jewish Life

Our rich tradition has survived the millennia based upon our partnership in creation with HaShem: chesed, mitzvot and tikkun olam.

All of these require participation in daily Jewish life and ritual, particularly as a community, a family. Jewish Federation works to improve Jewish life locally, nationally and around the world: for all Jews.

Whether it be celebrating Jewish holidays: hearing the Purim megilah, sitting down to a Pesach seder, dancing with the Torah on Simchat Torah, dining in a Sukkah, or lighting the Chanukah, we unite as a community. Whether it be providing opportunities to perform mitzvot or to learn more of our traditions and customs, we educate ourselves and our youth, creating special and memorable occasions for Jews of all ages.

Making the experience of communal Jewish life as rewarding and meaningful as possible is the pri mary purpose of Jewish Federation, and its partners [member congregations and organizations], in this community.

Our Story

Jewish Heritage

The rich heritage of our local community and the entire Jewish people is a legacy and a treasure we must rejoice, preserve and pass on.

Through remembrance, education and preservation we safeguard the memories, the faith and the sacrifi ces of those who came before us. The greatest gift to their legacy we can make is to strengthen and build upon this legacy for future generations.

Whether it be remembrance as a community and a people of the six million innocent victims of the Holocaust, educating others about the hatred that made their murder possible, teaching of the struggles survivors faced as immigrants to a new land, or celebrating and preserving the synagogues we have inherited, Jewish Federation is there to ensure that, with your help, all this happens.

Our Story

Israel

In addition to the great things your support allows Jewish Federation to achieve locally and nationally, it also allows us to respond as a community to the needs of vulnerable Jews of all ages in Israel and across the Jewish world.

With your help, we ensure poor, elderly Jews have medicine, heat, food and a friendly face to visit. We ensure newcomers to Israel have the services and support they need to succeed and thrive. We ensure Israel is never forced to turn away a Jew from her shores. We make it possible for members of our community to get to know Israel by being there, and we provide opportunities for Israelis to get to know us, here in America.
